Sublight Ships
Nine Early Access warships—each with integrated systems, abilities, and alternate loadouts to unlock.
In this wiki, the players category is the Ships roster hub. Sublight is a single-player space bullet heaven: you do not draft a multiplayer character pool—you captain one warship per run, place turrets inside firing arcs, and grow a build while rebel fleets and alien swarms escalate across six Early Access levels. Understanding how ships differ matters as much as knowing which gun is trendy this week.
Early Access launches with nine playable ships. Every hull brings integrated weapon systems, ship abilities, and hardpoint layouts. Most also unlock alternate loadouts that reframe those systems. Meta unlocks flow through challenges and credits, so your hangar grows as you complete objectives—not through loot boxes.
What actually changes between ships
Integrated weapons
Each ship carries built-in firepower that defines its opening minutes. Some lean missiles, some rails, some hybrid support. Demo development even introduced mid-run upgrade tiers for inbuilt weapons such as Sabre-style rails. Integrated guns are not cosmetic: they decide which early passives feel natural and which class-locked hardpoints you will eventually lean on.
Abilities
Ship abilities are the “captain moment” tools—mobility, defenses, or offensive bursts that sit outside normal turret cadence. Ability scaling bugs were fixed during demo patches, which tells you the system is meant to grow with upgrades rather than stay flat. Learn the ability cadence on your main before you blame the weapon pool for a failed Hunter chase.
Hardpoints and arcs
Hardpoints are where Sublight separates itself from simpler survivor-likes. Turrets cover cones; facing and placement matter. Ship-unique weapons were redesigned into class-locked hardpoints that buff a slot while usually locking it to a weapon category. Two ships with “similar DPS potential” can feel opposite if one presents wide broadsides and the other demands tight forward alignment.
Alternate loadouts
Alt loadouts are the long-term spice. Unlocking a second kit on a hull you already know often teaches more than buying a brand-new specialist. Treat alts as role swaps: missile pressure, support coverage, status enable, or precision rail focus.
How to use this hub
- Read the ship roster and skim Captains so meta unlocks stay secondary to hulls for a catalog mindset: what to inspect when unlocking, how challenges gate progress, and how to compare loadout variants.
- Cross-check the ships tier list for learning versus push letters—remember those are Early Access community guidance, not official ranks.
- Match weapons on the weapons tier list to your locked categories and arc layout.
- Ground your first hours with Getting Started, then deepen runs through the Guides hub.
Role families you will meet
Starter battleship
The onboarding canvas. Broad enough for mixed turrets, sturdy enough to survive imperfect arc play, and ideal while you learn sector routes, magnet paths, and boss loot decisions. Keep it as your challenge-farming default until frigates stop feeling alien.
Missile frigates
Highlighted by developer-facing examples such as Shortsword. These hulls sell saturation clear and decisive burst windows. They teach lead times and forward pressure—and punish captains who ignore flanks.
Support and hybrid frigates
Early uncommon options in the Cutter style expand the roster with versatility and extra turret presence. Support frigates are where many players first appreciate coverage and utility over raw alpha, especially under weekly modifiers.
Specialists
Later unlocks lean harder into a single fantasy: rail precision, barrage lead cones, escorts/fighters, or status stacking. Unlock them when you can explain the fantasy in one sentence and point to the weapon families that feed it.
Progression tips for the hangar
- Spend credits on alt loadouts for your main before spreading thin across every silhouette.
- Read armoury hints that show which mission unlocks the next research tier.
- When a hotfix adjusts free weapon tiers or prices, re-evaluate whether your ship’s locked category just became cheaper to feed.
- Track content drops on the roadmap—new ships are explicitly planned for 2026 Q4 and beyond.
