Weekly Level Modifiers Guide

Weekly rotating level modifiers are one of Sublight’s clearest Early Access promises: the same six levels and two launch factions can feel like a different war every week. Codebrew Software shipped this rotation so captains cannot autopilot one screenshot forever. This guide explains how to read a modifier, how it interacts with firing arcs, Ignite and Cold plans, salvage greed, and the thirty-minute Hunter window, and how to pick a ship before you waste a challenge run.

Pair this page with Best Builds for identity rules, How to Play for arc drills, and the build planner for a pre-flight checklist. When a patch retunes weapons or Hunter scaling, recheck patch notes before blaming the weekly tag.

What weekly modifiers are (and are not)

At Early Access launch, Sublight includes weekly rotating level modifiers on top of six finished levels, multiple bosses, rebel fleets, alien swarms, nine ships, and sixteen-plus weapon types. A modifier is a temporary rule layer — aggression, range pressure, spawn density, economy pacing, or survivability stress — that reshapes which arcs and passives feel free.

Modifiers are not a separate game mode with unique maps. They are not permanent balance. They do not replace learning fundamentals. If your arcs are still chaotic, fix How to Play first; a friendly week will not save a hull pointed the wrong way.

Pre-flight reading habit

Before every session:

  1. Open the hangar and note the current weekly modifier in plain language.
  2. Name one playstyle change out loud (for example “less salvage greed,” “favor pierce lanes,” “bring Cold freeze windows”).
  3. Pick a hull whose hardpoints support that change — see ship roster and ships tier list.
  4. Lock a status identity: Ignite, Cold, or coherent raw DPS via Ignite and Cold and Best Builds.
  5. Decide whether this is a short challenge farm or a Hunter-capable long run.

Skipping step one is how players declare the game “unfair” when the rotation simply punished last week’s screenshot.

How modifiers interact with Sublight’s unique combat

Firing arcs

Modifiers that increase flank spawns or wrap density punish forward-only cones. Broadside-friendly hulls and side coverage turrets climb in value. Modifiers that favor long sightlines reward barrage leading and rail poke if you can keep the lane clean.

Salvage greed

Anything that makes wreck fields hotter turns greed deaths into the week’s #1 failure mode. Scoop only on status windows — freeze or burn — as taught on Ignite and Cold.

Status identities

Ignite wants dwell time on targets. Cold wants volume to climb toward twenty stacks and freeze. A week that forces constant repositioning can starve Ignite unless you brought tools that reapply quickly after boosts. A week that clumps enemies into lanes is paradise for pierce chainguns feeding Cold.

Hunter timing

After roughly thirty minutes, the Hunter flagship can spawn. Modifiers that stretch fights or cut sustain make the Hunter window arrive while you are still unfinished. Treat long-run attempts as optional on hostile weeks; farm mid-length clears instead. Details live on Hunter Flagship.

Practical response templates

Use these as starting templates, then adjust with the tier list after patches:

Dense swarm / wrap week — Prefer explosive autocannon packages, side arc coverage, Cold freeze for scoop windows, and a hull that turns quickly. Avoid pure forward poke without side guns.

Lane / column week — Prefer pierce chainguns, calm boost discipline, and routes that create enemy lines. Barrage can work if sightlines stay long.

High aggression / close pressure week — Bring mobility alts, defensive passives, and a salvage plan that does not require parking in the wreck field. Consider ending before Hunter until your arcs feel automatic.

Economy or reward-skewed week — Do not abandon identity for random shiny passives. Take economy only after your damage sentence is stable.

Unknown or poorly worded modifier — Play one throwaway short run as a scout. Write three notes: spawn feel, salvage risk, which gun stayed online. Then commit credits.

Ship and captain choices under rotation

Keep at least two hangar identities unlocked — for example an Ignite broadside clearer and a Cold pierce controller — so you can swap at the loadout screen. Captains matter as meta unlocks, but a second combat hull still beats a cosmetic captain when the week changes; see Captains.

Missile frigates such as developer-referenced Shortsword roles can excel when modifiers favor saturation, but they still need flank answers. Starter battleship platforms remain the safest scout hull for unfamiliar weeks.

Training loop for modifier literacy

  1. Screenshot or jot the weekly text at session start.
  2. Play one scout clear under twenty minutes.
  3. Adjust turret placement and identity.
  4. Attempt a push run only if scout deaths were mechanical, not random.
  5. Stop when you start forcing last week’s build into this week’s rules.

Weekly modifiers are Sublight’s anti-staleness engine. Treat them as part of the skill test — not as noise around the “real” meta.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Sublight questions.

Do weekly modifiers change which Sublight build is best?

Yes. Keep at least two identities unlocked and choose after reading the rotation instead of forcing one loadout every week.

Should I always push for the Hunter on a bad modifier week?

No. Hostile weeks are perfect for mid-length challenge farms. Save Hunter practice for rotations that match your sustain and arcs.

Where do I learn status plans that survive modifiers?

Read Ignite and Cold for stacking rules, then Best Builds for weapon family templates that multiply those identities.

Will new factions change weekly modifiers?

Q4 2026 and later roadmap content will add enemy patterns that interact with the rotation. Recheck this page after major updates.

How do modifiers relate to the tier list?

Tier letters assume a baseline week. When the rotation heavily favors a family, treat the tier list as a starting point and re-rank for that session.
